The success of our Free the monkeys campaign, allowed us to release three lucky spider monkeys: Corny, Kasha, and Watson. These patient individuals had been undergoing a preparatory rehabilitation period at Makisapa Alpa for nearly two years before their release in February 2024. Corny and Kasha were fitted with state of the art GPS collars that allowed us track their progress during a full year. The collars have dropped now, and the monkeys can continue their lives in the jungle.
They won’t be alone for long, as three juvenile spider monkeys Otto, Lucy, and Libertad have begun their rehabilitation period at Makisapa Alpa and will soon have the chance to join the free group and learn all the tricks of the trade. And our lovely mothers monkeys Mea & Gima gave birth this past February to two playful little critters who will no doubt have their chance to explore the towering heights and endless treasures of Selva Viva in just a few years.
In order to provide the next generation of free monkeys the best chances of success in the jungle, we want to offer them a place to swing. This enclosure will be big and roofless, offering the closest conditions to freedom that we can offer this critically endangered species. The impact on the quality of life of the monkeys will be huge (we have observed astonishing decrease of stress behavior in the woolly monkeys since they inhabit a similar open enclosure). Furthermore, the enclosure will significantly increase the chances of success of the animals that are released, further aiding the ecosystem services such as dispersing seeds, fertilizing, pollinating all which will benefit the overall health of the Amazon.
