We are so happy to see that you are interested in the project and our campaign!
Let us tell you more about the campaign.
The “Free the Monkeys” campaign aims to raise a total of 30 000 USD starting on the 7th of November 2022 to reactivate the rehabilitation and release program of amaZOOnico called “Makisapa ReWilding”.
Our mission is to contribute to conserve the biodiversity of our planet and to save the endangered species of spider monkeys in the Amazon Rainforest, the white-bellied spider monkey.
Our spider monkey release program led to various successful rehabilitations and releases of spider monkeys (the white-bellied spider monkey, Ateles belzebuth) in 2011. The program accompanies the monkeys through a period of rehabilitation and dehumanization deep in the rainforest jungle to ensure a successful recovery from their time in captivity. The release process takes at least one year. For their care and observation two parabiologists as well as specialized primate behavior biologists are hired. The monkeys are tracked with GPS collars for one year after their release allowing close monitoring of their progress towards a free life in the jungle.
Developed in collaboration with the Ministry of Environment in Ecuador, the program had to be shut down despite great success, because amaZOOnico could not afford the costs anymore after the pandemic. But since there are three new spider monkeys at amaZOOnico, which need get a chance to be released into the wild, we – a group of current and former volunteers of amaZOOnico – are raising the financial means to bring the program back to life, to give Watson, Corny and Kasha – the spider monkeys that could be reintroduced through the program – a life in freedom within the next year.
We actively raised money starting from the 7th of November 2022 until the end of 2022. Unfortunately, we did not hit our goal. So we leave the fundraiser open as we depend on your support.
We aim to raise 30,000 dollars with Givengain.
